How to Prevent Cockroaches in Your South Florida Home

South Florida's warm, humid climate is paradise for cockroaches. Here is what actually works to keep them out of your home and when it is time to call a professional.

Why Cockroaches Thrive in South Florida

South Florida's subtropical climate provides everything cockroaches need to survive and reproduce: warmth, humidity, and abundant food sources. Miami-Dade County is home to several cockroach species, but the two that cause the most problems for homeowners are the American cockroach and the German cockroach.

American Cockroaches vs. German Cockroaches

American cockroaches, also called palmetto bugs, are the large reddish-brown roaches that fly and are commonly found in garages, attics, and around drains. They prefer outdoor environments but enter homes in search of food and water. German cockroaches are smaller, faster-reproducing, and far more difficult to eliminate. They infest kitchens and bathrooms, hide in cracks and crevices, and can develop resistance to pesticides quickly.

Proven Prevention Strategies

Eliminate Food Sources

Store all food in sealed containers. Clean up crumbs and spills immediately. Do not leave pet food out overnight. Empty trash cans regularly and use bins with tight-fitting lids.

Eliminate Water Sources

Fix leaky pipes and faucets promptly. Do not leave standing water in sinks or on counters. Ensure your dishwasher door seals properly. Check under sinks for moisture.

Seal Entry Points

Seal gaps around pipes, cables, and conduits where they enter the home. Install door sweeps on exterior doors. Check window screens for tears or gaps. Seal cracks in the foundation and exterior walls.

Reduce Clutter

Cockroaches hide in cardboard boxes, paper bags, and cluttered storage areas. Keep storage areas organized and use plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes.

When DIY Is Not Enough

If you are seeing cockroaches regularly despite your best prevention efforts, it is time for professional treatment. German cockroach infestations in particular require a structured treatment program because they reproduce so rapidly. Dade Pest Solutions' German Roach Elimination Program is a three-visit protocol that eliminates infestations with a 90-day guarantee after the final visit. Starting at $450.
